Archimedes of Syracuse(ca. 287 B.C.E.–212 B.C.E.)Greek Geometry
MechanicsOf the mathematicians of Greek antiquity,
Archimedes should be considered the greatest. His contributions to geometry and mechanics,
as well as hydrostatics, place him on a higher
pedestal than his contemporaries. And as his
works were gradually translated and introduced
into the West, he exerted as great an influence
there as his thought already had in Byzantium
and Arabia.
